the issue with the mexican party was that they were encouraging people to dress the caricature. the equivalent was if they'd decided they wanted a party where everyone had to draw oversized red lips on themselves, eat watermelon and fried chicken. black people did not invent watermelon or big red lips and nor are they the only ones who eat fried chicken, but the caricature is still very degrading to black people and you don't do that. → Anonymous

ok but are you mexican? i think mexicans should know better about what's racist for them than you. Don't act like 'oh it's not racist blablabla' when you're not even mexican. Because real mexicans (who have common sense) got fucking offended by it. → Anonymous

I’m not Mexican and I don’t claim to be. The arguments I see for people being offended are ridiculous though. All I see are people getting upset that they had bushy mustaches (not Mexican-specific), a mariachi band (i’ve already spoken about how I feel about music), and sombreros (Mexicans didn’t even invent the wide-brimmed hat or even sombreros so they have no reason to be personally offended when someone wears one, especially not when it’s fucking hot and people are getting sunburned). People getting upset over these things makes no sense. This is like me getting upset every time someone other than a black person wore a snapback (which blacks didn’t invent but they are heavily associated with), listened to rap music, or even wore dreads (blacks aren’t the only ones who wear dreads and just because we’re the ones who are associated with that particular hairstyle doesn’t mean it’s “ours”). It’s irrational and unnecessary. You don’t have ownership over something just because your people are the ones who either invented it or who are most commonly associated with it. If that was the case, we wouldn’t have paper, food, or some types of clothing that we do. Sharing is caring and it’s how we function as a people.

With all that being said, I’m not excusing racism. I don’t know what your friends went through and I can’t speak for them. I heard one person say that they/their friends had sombreros thrown at them because they were Hispanic. That’s not cool in any way shape or form and I’m sorry if anyone had that happen to them. However that isn’t 5SOS’s fault, it’s the fault of the ignorant pieces of shit who did it. I won’t say that no one experienced some form of racism on Saturday because I wouldn’t be surprised if they did. If they did however, it wasn’t just because people wore sombreros and mustaches and enjoyed a mariachi band.

I’m sorry I forgot the part where only Mexicans (of which there were many there as well as other people of Latin American descent) should be able to enjoy and appreciate mariacahi bands.

#I fucking love mariachi bands #i’d prefer to hear them play rather than the same album over and over and over agin #like the played the 5sos album over and over and over again #if they had hired a rap group to come play would that be racist too? #oh and there was a soul food truck there as well is that racist? #obviously white people enjoying tacos is racist as well did you know? #honestly do you people hear yourselves? #i’m black btw not white i just see white people complaining as per #and it’s the same old shit #like shut the fuck up already #5sos

1) im not white

2) yes if they did that it would be racist

3) i won’t shut the fuck up about racism have a nice day

Except I hear no one talking about why exactly it’s racist to like another culture’s music. My own Mexican (and Salvi, Guatemalan, etc.) friends have no issue sharing their culture with me. I play music and I enjoy hearing and learning music from different cultures. It’s music and it should be shared with others not only something that should be enjoyed by that one group of people. I don’t claim ownership over rap just because I’m black. If a white person or an Asian person likes it, then so be it. If they want to take part in it then that’s their choice as long as they’re respectful. People on here act like it’s some sort of rule that every culture needs to stick to their own and not appreciate the wonders of others’. Stop being so close-minded and let people enjoy things. This isn’t blackface or wearing a headdress or article of clothing with a cultural significance behind it, it’s music (which was made to be enjoyed) and food (also made to be enjoyed).

you missed the entire point of this post :)

it’s not about the music. it’s about the “mexican hats” and mustaches they put on to “weird people out” and the stereotype that was promoted it was about the use of a culture to make something more “fun” this post was meant to show how ashton is aware he did wrong but won’t own up to his actions so you wasted your breath pal

A sombrero is a hat. It is not specific to Mexico. It was desgined to keep the sun out of workers’ eyes. It’s a fucking hat. There are no traditions involved in attaining them and there are different “sombreros” in different countries. It’s. a. fucking. hat. It was hot on Saturday and let me tell you they came in pretty useful when we were waiting in line. No one was poking fun. We needed them and used them for their intended purpose.

I’m still laughing at how you claim the mustaches are racist. Apparently only Mexicans have bushy mustaches. Duh. I’m sure the Latino dad I saw wearing said fake mustache was seething with anger over the racism.

In February, we headed to LA to do some work on the album, which was absolutely crazy. It’s a different world out there though at one point I was worried I wasn’t even going to get into the country. All other guys went through passport control fine, then a woman stopped me, called over our tour manage Paul and said: “There’s a problem with him. He needs to go back.” They took me into a room and I thought they were going to keep me there for hours, but thankfully the women who came to talk to me knew who Simon Cowell was and knew I was a band. In the end i was interviewed for an hour about what I was doing there and why I was visiting America. It turned out that my name was flagged up as similar to that of someone they were looking for, so they were just being cautious. I got stopped at customs as well, but again I got through okay as the guy there was really nice.
